Port of Rijeka Authority is an institution founded by the Government of the Republic of Croatia to manage, plan and develop the port of Rijeka area. The area consists of five port basins (Rijeka, Sušak, Bakar, Omišalj and Raša) with twelve specialized terminals. Its core responsibilities are to grant concessions, develop strategy plans, harmonize and supervise concessionaires according to the Croatian and European laws and regulate order, safety and security in the port.
Due to a large-scale investment strategy exceeding 500 M €, the Authority intends to develop port of Rijeka as the most desirable intermodal centre in the North Adriatic for international maritime business.
The new state-of-the-art Rijeka Gateway container terminal is the latest achievement of such dedicated investment strategy. Its superior maritime capacities reaching 20 metres in sea depth created a distinct advantage which was recognized by APM Terminals, a world-class port operator. Being part of A.P. Moller – Maersk, one of the top integrated container logistic companies in the world and a member of A.P. Moller Group it set the way forward for the port to reach its full potential.
In joint venture with Enna Logic called Rijeka Gateway they signed a 50-year Concession Agreement with the Port of Rijeka Authority with the objective to position the terminal in the spotlight of the North Adriatic container transport. The terminal will start operating in 2025 and become one of their most modern and automated terminals in the world. It will affect the growth of the total container turnover up to 1 M TEUs by 2025 and 1,5 M TEUs by the end of the decade.
In addition, Port of Rijeka Authority sucessfully coordinates European projects. The significant co – funding by the program Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) estimated in total at 426 M€ is already implemented or planned in two programming periods( 2014-2020 and 2021-2027). Completed projects include construction projects for upgrading railway and intermodal connections at the Rijeka Gateway Container Terminal and Adriatic Gate Container Terminal, General Cargo Terminal in Rijeka Basin, Bakar Bulk Cargo Terminal and General Cargo in Raša Basin. Projects in progress include dredging at the Adriatic Gate Container Terminal and establishing a single Port Community System. The next Multiannual Financial Framework provides an opportunity to carry out ten well-prepared projects that focus on expanding exisiting piers, new container capacities, and other projects that implement smart and innovative energy solutions.
In the vicinity of the Port of Rijeka area, there are also new port facilities operating, a Special Purpose Port – Industrial Port LNG Terminal in Omišalj, and exclusive luxury nautical marina operated by a new concessionaire ACI-GITONE, a nautical rising star established by Lurssen, one of the most exclusive superyacht builder in the world and ACI Croatia, proving the potentials of the port for handling all types of cargo, and related industries.
